Düsseldorf is a stunning city. This place is not your usual traditional, German city. Coming from one of the most Gothic and German cities of all -Nürnberg, I can firmly say this. Even if this Rhine port-city is not a mega-metropolis like Berlin or Hamburg, Düsseldorf has the same International urban flair and plenty of cosmopolitan vibes. Regarding architecture, the most dominant stroke in my opinion, is : Art Deco – monumental Art Deco. Alongside, lay tremendous examples of modernist (Bauhaus) buildings and also a little bit of Jugendstil. Nevertheless, the Art Deco architecture of Düsseldorf made the most lasting impression on me.
Now, let’s get to the most important aspect of my infatuation with Düsseldorf. Whenever I visit, or travel through a new city I feel the urge to make a visual scan of the local urban imagery – defining local brands, brand marks for various landmarks, institutions, logos, signs, symbols, typographic examples, a scan of all these visual samples which I call my “local urban inspirational creuset”. Now that I have the privilege of living here, I’ve decided to make a multiple part blog post on this matter. So, starting from now on, you will find here examples of logos, signs, street posters, typography from Düsseldorf, visual samples which inspire me, which I find stunning, distinctive, even peculiar or insightful.
